Oak Ridge High's softball team has appeared to turn its season around.
Not that long ago, the Trojans were in the depths of a seven-game losing streak, but now have won six of their last eight games to improve to 5-3 in the Sierra Foothill League and 8-10 overall.
An 11-1 win over Folsom Thursday was a big improvement over a 5-4 loss suffered against the Bulldogs about a month ago.
"Our energy and consistency is coming around," Oak Ridge coach Sam Toy said. "As a whole, the entire team has improved and we're just beginning to peak at the right time of the season."
In the win over Folsom, Oak Ridge's offense was dynamite, as they had 15 hits in the five-inning game. Cameron Kirtlan led the way with four hits in four at bats from her leadoff position in the batting order. Kirtlan also scored three runs and drove in another.
"Our team chemistry is the biggest difference," said Kirtlan of the team's improved play. "We're playing as a team more and less as individuals."
Kendall Kelly, hitting behind Kirtlan at the top of the order, had two hits, scored twice and also drove in two runs. Katelyn Castro also had two hits and drove in two runs.
Amber Orchard, Hannah Dardano and Nicole Eccles each had two hits with Orchard and Dardano driving in runs and each scoring once. Katina Vail singled, drove in a run and also scored two runs. Katie Schmitt, running twice for Eccles, also scored two runs.
The win over Folsom has Oak Ridge in third place in the Sierra Foothill League behind Rocklin and Woodcreek. The Timberwolves are the Trojans' next league opponent, who they host on Thursday. Oak Ridge plays host to Ponderosa on Wednesday in their annual breast cancer awareness game. The team kicks off the week at home Monday in another non-league game against Sheldon.
"I'm excited for the rest of the season," Kirtlan said. "I feel good things are ahead. Our goal is to make the playoffs and I think we can do that. After that, it's the quest for 10."
