After only two preseason non-league games, Oak Ridge High's varsity girls' softball team gets right into it when they host Granite Bay in the Sierra Foothill League opener on Tuesday.
The Trojans opened the season March 3 with a 6-3 win over Davis. Camryn Kelly had two hits and scored a run, Morgan Thomason had a hit and drove in a run, while Emily Thompson also picked up an RBI. Thomason allowed three earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven in the win.
Last Thursday, the Trojans suffered an 8-6 loss to Pleasant Grove. Madison Steele, Shelby Johnson and Grace Kilday each had two hits, while Kilday drove in two and Steele, Johnson and Genna Ghidossi each had one RBI.
Oak Ridge trailed 8-1, but scored one run in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to make it close.
"Thursday was our last preseason non-league game," Oak Ridge coach Sean Schnars said. "We made a few mental errors, but played a great game. We're ready for Tuesday's first league game."
The Trojans are coming off a difficult season a year ago, winning only three league games and finishing 9-13 overall. With nine returning players, Schnars is optimistic for a better season this year.
"I expect, barring injuries, we will surprise people," Schnars said." This is a very dedicated and hard- working group, but the SFL is always very tough."
